Flag Day and Father's Day Weekend
How did silk flags like General Washington’s Commander in Chief’s Standard survive battles, and what stories can they tell us about symbols and causes? Throughout this weekend, add a stitch to a reproduction of a Revolutionary flag, design your own flag, and try cutting a six-pointed star like the one on the Washington Standard.
Compete in an interactive “capture the flag” challenge in the Museum’s galleries and join hands-on activities inspired by the work of flagmaker Rebecca Flower Young, who advertised “all kinds of colours” for the Revolutionary cause from her shop here in Philadelphia. At an afternoon talk, "Made in Philadelphia" on Saturday, June 15 at 2:00pm, learn more about Rebecca Flower Young’s story and other city artisans and family businesses who contributed to supplying the army. Join an educator for a periodic ten-minute talk about two remarkable flags on display in the Galleries.
