Phillis Wheatley's Poetry
Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, written by Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American woman poet, was lauded in both Europe and the American colonies as an example of the artistic and intellectual equality of people of African descent. Wheatley was born in Africa but was captured and brought to America as an enslaved child. This original copy of her work, published in 1773, is autographed by Wheatley.
